Cumberland Pencil Museum
The first pencils ever made were manufactured at Keswick following
the discovery of graphite in the Seathwaite Valley. It started
as a small cottage industry but the Cumberland Pencil Company
grew naturally out of these small businesses and its formation
in 1832 set a benchmark for quality that has lasted to the present
day.
The
Cumberland Pencil Company manufactures the world famous Derwent
Fine Art pencils. These are used by professional and leisure artists
who have come to acknowledge the tradition, craftsmanship and
quality of Derwent.
Discover the story of the famous Derwent pencil - from the discovery
of graphite in the 1500's to the modern day methods of pencil
manufacture. The museum also is home to the World's largest pencil
and has a children's drawing area and gift shop.
