Castlerigg Stone Circle
Castlerigg Stone Circle may be the most beautiful stone circle
site in Great Britain. The stones sit within a field perched above
Keswick, surrounded by the majestic Lakeland fells of Blencathra
and Skiddaw and the beautiful St.Johns Vale. This setting gives
amazing sunsets and sun rises, a photographers paradise!
The
circle has been dated from around 3000 BC which makes it one of
the first stone circles in Britain. The stones are arranged with
an entrance on the East side which suggests the sun shone through
the structure at Sunrise.
Archaeologists speculate about the use of the circle - a burial
site? an area used to help map the stars? Whatever the use, the
site is unlikely to be dug up in the near future so the secret
is safe (for a while!)
There is roadside parking near the site and the area is wheelchair
accessible.
